August: introductions

Summer in to Autumn

-August-

Introductions

Concepts to focus on: August is our new beginning.. The children are in a state of insecurity as the continuing students notice the loss of their friends and get to know new faces, and the new children are dealing with separation and unfamiliar routines. Now is a time for extreme consistency. Remember to follow carefully our schedule and to have predictable activities. Take careful note of new relationships forming and potential opportunities for conflict. PRESENCE is needed to offer safety and reassurance. Set up lots of opportunities for success.

Colors: Brown is more prominent now, along with reds, oranges. The blue of the sky and deep green of the oak tree can be used as accents. The colors are beginning to darken, becoming deeper. Avoid using pastels.

Ideas: This is a time for old familiar activities and reestablishing agreements. Sing name songs, family songs, friendship songs, play our versions of “Marco Polo” and “Where is My Friend,” to create boundaries, practice our blessing. Walk the botanic garden, remember familiar games, practice traveling together.
